Homeopathy and Hyland’s: A History of the Homeopathic Remedy and its Biggest Innovative Leader

Healthcare, Healthcare Industry

Since its founding over a century ago, Hyland’s has built a name for itself as a reliable source for consumers seeking safer alternatives to traditional medicine. Today, the company is the largest manufacturer of homeopathic medicines in North America with products available for the whole family. With homeopathy as its mission, Hyland’s continues to grow its legacy.

Understanding Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a type of medicine that is rooted in the belief that the body can cure itself. It is a system of healing that is believed to be safe, gentle, and natural, and it works with the body to alleviate symptoms and help it restore itself.

Homeopathic medicines – also referred to as “remedies” – are made from natural active ingredients and have fewer of the side effects that may come along with traditional medications. As such, if all instructions and guidelines are followed, homeopathic medicines can be taken by individuals of all ages ranging from babies and children to the elderly.

The primary difference between homeopathic and traditional medicine is that the former tends to focus on a more holistic approach to health. Evaluation and establishment of diagnosis are both based on a homeopath diving into a patient’s history, followed by an examination and investigation. In addition to inquiring about symptoms, which is where conventional medicine typically stops, the homeopathic approach takes into consideration the individual and the unique way in which the symptoms affect them.

Lastly, it must be noted that homeopathy and herbal medicines are two different types of treatment options. Homeopathy is its own, unique therapeutic approach, and while homeopathic remedies are derived from natural ingredients, homeopathy is still different from herbal medicine and other types of natural medicines. While both homeopathic and herbal remedies are derived from natural ingredients, the key distinction is in the preparation of each. Herbal remedies use whole botanicals while homeopathic preparation involves a dilution and succession process that results in minute doses of the original substances in the finished product. Thus, homeopathy is its own, unique therapeutic approach that is safer than other treatment options.

The Hyland’s Narrative

The story of Hyland’s is rooted in its deep history of dedication to enabling families to address a broad spectrum of health concerns in the best possible way. Part of what makes the company so unique is that it honors its roots through a deep connection to the company’s past. At the same time, Hyland’s is firmly grounded in the present, and it is building a solid ground for the future that is partly based on purposeful scientific research.

The story of Hyland’s begins in 1903 when eight Los Angeles-based physicians founded a company called Standard Homeopathic Pharmacy. They hired George Hyland, a local pharmacist, to manage their day-to-day operations.

In 1923, the company was joined by a pharmacy student, Cecil Craig, who took over managing the manufacturing laboratory after graduating from pharmacy school four years later. He was eventually behind the hallmark of Hyland’s medicines and a key factor in the company’s success in the pediatric market. Largely driven by his daughter’s inability to swallow traditional pills, Craig developed Hyland’s Pink Aspirin for Children that could be administered as a unique dissolving tablet and was, therefore, easier for his daughter to take. Hyland’s Pink Aspirin for Children was not a homeopathic product.

The next few years were marked by the company’s continued expansion. A complete move to a larger location – the first of many – took place in 1953. Eventually, in 1969, the company moved to 131st Street in Los Angeles. It is still at that location, while manufacturing keeps expanding to additional buildings.

Growing and Expanding

The year 1987 was another milestone for the company, as it brought on Jay Borneman as its marketing director. A fourth generation in the homeopathic industry, Borneman disrupted the more traditional food, drugstore, and mass merchandiser market with Hyland’s Teething Tablets that went on to become one of the most sought after teething remedies on the market at the time.

Fast forward a few more years to 1995 and another milestone took place in the form of Hyland’s acquisition of Luyties Pharmacal Co. This transaction categorized the company as the oldest American-owned homeopathic manufacturer in the United States. What followed next in 1998 was the creation of 1-800 Homeopathy, a mail-order catalog, as well as an expansion of the client base from an initial 2,500 to 150,000 customers online and through direct mail.

Hyland’s Today

Hyland’s remains aware of the constantly changing needs of today’s modern families, and the company is always seeking to maintain its status as an innovative leader as it addresses those needs. This is especially vital at a time when many drugs have a long list of potential side effects. For that reason among many, the need for homeopathic remedies that have safe and natural ingredients is greater than ever before.

As such, Hyland’s has adapted its business model in accordance with the evolving needs. In addition to its dynamic promotional aspects, as well as optimized media efforts, it maintains its long-standing relationships with retail collaborators. What most notably sets Hyland’s apart as an experienced enterprise are the many retailers that turn to the company for its competence in and knowledge of homeopathy.

Hyland’s Product Line

Hyland’s has a rich pipeline of products that addresses several important moments in people’s lives. These range from master athletes as they tackle their endurance milestones all the way to parents as they seek to ease their children’s discomforts. The pipeline entails a variety of homeopathic products that address many ailments with no known side effects. These include products that address general pain relief; cough, cold, and flu; oral pain relief; allergies; digestive problems; ear conditions; stress and sleep; first aid; skin care; and women’s health. According to the Hyland’s website, the company is there “when legs are needing a rest, when aching ears need drops, when noses need unclogging, and when little bugs in the hair become big problems for everyone.”

While Hyland’s products are designed with three age groups in mind – babies (ages 0-2), children (ages 2-12), and adults – some of the most popular products are those that target babies’ discomfort and oral pain.

Two Separate Remedies: Hyland’s Teething Tablets vs. Hyland’s Baby Oral Pain Relief Tablets

A more recent addition to the Hyland’s pipeline is Hyland’s Baby Oral Pain Relief Tablets. While the company had a past product called Hyland’s Teething Tablets, the Oral Pain Relief Tablets are not a replacement. Rather, they are an entirely new formula intended to treat a broader set of symptoms. While Hyland’s Baby Oral Pain Relief Tablets can provide relief from tooth pain, they are designed to treat several baby oral discomforts such as gum sensitivity, swelling, and oral soreness. Further

more, this product addresses overall irritability associated with oral pain. Hyland’s Teething Tablets have not been manufactured since 2016 and were recalled in 2017 by the company. This was in large part a response to the FDA’s concerns regarding a labeling issue regarding the presence of belladonna. Nevertheless, Hyland’s is convinced of, and stands behind, the safety of its previous Hyland’s Teething Tablets, as neither the company nor the FDA found any unsafe amounts of belladonna in any of its products. Given all of that, Hyland’s remains cognizant of the FDA’s concerns and, therefore, decided to forego the use of belladonna in its new Hyland’s Baby Oral Pain Relief Tablets.
