President Trump Addresses the Nation About the Wall

On Tuesday, January 8, 2019, President Trump addressed the nation for the first time since the government shutdown. The government has been shut down for 18 days, and the shutdown does not show any signs of ending any time soon. Democrats have stated that Donald Trump is holding the Americans hostage.

President Trump wants $5.7 billion to build the wall. The Democrats, who are in control of the House of Reprensatives, are strongly opposed to the wall. It is estimated that 25 percent of the government agencies have closed. Thousands of workers have not been paid since the government shutdown.

President Trump had an eight-minute speech on television. He also stated that the reason that the government is still shut down is because of the Democrats. President Trump stated that illegal immigration is a humanitarian crisis. He also stated that it is a crisis of the soul.

President Trump pointed out all of the crime that is related to illegal immigration. He stated that 90 percent of the heroin that is sold comes from Mexico. He also stated that previous Democratic politicians have supported the wall. Former President Obama, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton have reported stated that they have been in favor of a 2,000 mile border act.

President Trump also talked about how many Americans have been murdered by illegal immigrants. He plans to travel to the southwest border on Thursday. Nancy Pelosi, who is the speaker of the House, stated that she is concerned about the safety of women and children at the border. She also stated that the president has to stop holding the American people hostage.

Chuck Schumer is the Senate minority leader. He demanded that President Trump ended the shutdown. He also stated that President Trump is having a temper tantrum.

Half of Americans have stated that President Trump is responsible for the shutdown. However, he does have a lot of support from his own party. Seventy-seven percent of Republicans support the president’s refusal to pass a budget without funding for the wall.
