After a week in politics marked by the celebration of the life of former President George H.W. Bush juxtaposed with the brewing controversy over the allegations of Russian collusion, it is obvious that President Donald Trump is getting nervous. And he should be.
Although Trump and his administration continue to decry that special counsel Robert Mueller is merely conducting a witch hunt, the events of the last few weeks do not prove this allegation. Over the past few weeks, Mueller and the Southern District of New York have both filed reports that are helping us to understand the bigger extent of Trump and his administration’s plans to collude with Russian to win the 2016 presidential election.
Because so much of the reports have been redacted to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, we do not yet know the full details. However, what is becoming apparent is that Trump and his cohorts should be very worried.
A few of the highlights of the revelations thus far include the fact that Mueller caught former campaign manager Paul Manafort in a series of outright lies and that Trump attempted to obstruct justice by working to thwart the investigation into Russian collusion. This attempt to impede was evident through Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey and his repeated public attacks on those witnesses who were cooperating with the investigation.
The biggest bombshell that points to Mueller having the goods on Trump was former Trump attorney Michael Cohen’s guilty plea last week. This was followed up on Friday with sentencing memos by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District recommending that Cohen spend approximately five years in prison as punishment for his crimes.
Piling evidence of Trump’s attempts to curry favor with Russian government officials in order to obtain the permits he needed for his Moscow real estate investment project is only adding fuel to the fire. All of the pieces of the puzzle are beginning to come together. Although we only have a small glimpse into what the special investigation has uncovered, we have enough to know that Mueller has more to come. Trump and his cohorts should brace themselves for the rough waters ahead.
