“You don’t strike rich by playing it safe.”
No matter what endeavor in life you are approaching, following this one simple quote by Nick Vertucci could lead you to astounding success. The evidence? Nick Vertucci’s overwhelming success over the last thirty years.
Nick Vertucci is a prominent real estate investor in Orange County. He is the owner of NVREA, Nick Vertucci Real Estate Academy, and the author of “Seven Figure Decisions: Having the Balls to Succeed.” He has been recognized as a mentor and inspiration and has built a strong reputation within his community. However, Nick was not always at the height of his success, and his life story, along with his dedication to this one concept, has allowed him to find achievement in many aspects of his life – most importantly, in real estate investing and as a poker player.
Success in Real Estate Investing
In August of 2018 the Nick Vertucci Real Estate Academy was recognized by Inc. 5000 as one of the fastest-growing private companies in the United States. Between 2014 and 2017 the company experienced a 259% revenue growth. Founder and CEO, Nick Vertucci, responded that “We are honored to be recognized alongside some of the most successful corporations out there by Inc. I am beyond thankful for my entire team for putting in the hard work and helping grow this company and making the daily operations seamless.”
Twenty years ago, Nick Vertucci never imagined that one day he would be a prominent real estate investor in Orange County. In fact, he was a successful business man, but in a different industry. Nick started his professional career in his early twenties when he created a company that sold computer parts. With years of dedication and hard work, Nick Vertucci transformed himself into a millionaire. However, in 2000 during the dot com crash Vertucci lost everything. He was seeking new opportunities when an acquaintance invited him to a real estate seminar. At first, Vertucci was reluctant to go – thankfully, he changed his mind. Following the seminar Vertucci dedicated himself to building his business. And again, Vertucci was a millionaire. Both times, Vertucci displayed his ability to taking high risks and reaping the rewards.
In 2014, Nick Vertucci launched NVREA, or Nick Vertucci Real Estate Academy. After a falling out with his business partners related to another project, Vertucci was launched onto a new path. Fortunately for him, it was one that would lead to his prestigious recognition. NVREA is an education platform designed to help the everyday person become a successful real estate investor and is based on the concept that “Wealth is Waiting.” Vertucci’s seminars and classes teach students about all aspects of becoming an investor, including: wholesales and flipping contracts, rehabbing and flipping properties, buying and holding properties for long-term cash flow, commercial investment, leveraging your IRA and 401K to fund investments, asset protection, and much more.
Taking Risks in Poker
The extravagant success found in Nick Vertucci’s story can often be accredited to Nick’s passion for poker. First gaining traction in 2004, today Nick is a recognized player at the tables.
The name of the game: Texas Hold’Em. This is the primary game that Nick can be seen playing – it is a variation of the card game, poker. The game starts with two cards known as the hole cards being dealt to each player at the table. Following that deal, five community cards are dealt face up on the table in three stages: the flop, the turn, and the river. The goal of the game is to get the best five card poker hand from the seven cards available. Players are prompted to place bets throughout the game and can either: check, call, raise, or fold on their hands. Betting takes place before the flop and following each card. The player with the best five card hand wins the game.
Vertucci first gained recognition in this game in 2004 at the Commerce Casino where he entered into the No-Limit Texas Hold’Em Championship. Although he did not come in first, Nick walked out with an 8th place ranking and $7,530. This win placed him in ranking for the Hendon Mob Poker Database. Through the years and with practice Vertucci has continued to place rank at various tournaments around the world. He is recognized on the “Global Poker Index Ranking,” “All Time Money List Best Rank,” “All Time Money List Current Rank,” “California, USA All Time Money List,” “United States All Time Money List,” and “All Time Money List.” Vertucci has also sat at the World Series of Poker (WSOP), World Poker Tournament (WPT), Poker After Dark, and Live at the Bike game.
Vertucci has played with an array of players, ranging from high profile celebrities to world renowned poker players. Here are just a few he has sat with:
- Jennifer Tilly, American Actress. Jennifer is also a World Series of Poker Ladies Event bracelet winner.
- Don Cheadle, American Actor. Don is the organizer of Ante Up for Africa, a charity poker tournament.
- Ben Affleck, American Actor. Ben is ranked by the Hendon Mob: 5,477 on the All Time Money List.
- James Woods, Canadian Actor. James is ranked by the Henon Mob 6,476 on the All Time Money List.

The Skill’s the Put Him Ahead
Playing world renowned poker players can be intimidating; and, as you can see from the list above, Vertucci is not shy to challenging the best. The question is however, how does his strategy compare to those of his competitors?
Coming from a real estate background can provide a poker player a multitude of benefits. Real estate investors are strategic, methodical, and excellent analysists. His experience and skills in real estate sets him apart from his opponents, providing him a unique advantage. Let’s look at how these skills align.
- Most Important – Mindset.
The first principle that Vertucci often outlines when speaking publicly is the importance of one’s mindset. If you have ever been on the verge of closing a multi-million dollar deal or have gone all in with aces high, you may be in tune with the high level of anxiety and excitement associated with both actions. If you win, great. Most individuals know how to manage those emotions. But what about when you lose?
This is the challenge as both a real estate investor and as a poker player – losing big. It is always a possibility and can often deter people from playing again. In real estate, Vertucci has not let loses stop him from finding the right deals. More specifically, he created a concept that allows him to continue to push forward even when he hits bumps in the roads. This mindset: “See it. Believe it. Map it. Execute in.” The concept outlines the primary tool Vertucci teaches at the Nick Vertucci Real Estate Academy; and in a recent interview with Ideamensch, Nick clarifies just what this mean.
- See it. “You have to first see what you want. Envision the finished product/business/goal etc. You need a clear vision as to what you want to accomplish.”
- Believe it. “Then you have to believe the Vision. Most people don’t really believe they can succeed. They have fears. Fears of failure. Lack of confidence. Low self-limitations. They don’t truly believe they can be great. I train my students to realize their minds is their strongest muscle and until they build that up they will most likely stop themselves. I teach them how to do this and how to maintain it.”
- Map it. “Then you have to have a plan and a system. Something that works. Something that is doable and real. You cannot go after anything haphazardly.”
- Execute it. “At some point after you have seen it and now internally believed it and have made the sound plan… You must ACT! Take action and execute it! Or all you have is a great idea/dream/plan. You must be able to make that decision and take that calculates risk and pursue your dream.”
When Vertucci was at a loss in year 2000 and had lost his millions, he did not give up. With a dedicated mindset and a vision to build a successful business again, he was able to achieve his goals. Through the almost twenty years he has been in the real estate industry, Vertucci has continued to implement this four-key system into his daily life.
One great example of when Vertucci used this concept in his personal life was in year 2013 when he experienced a negative turn in his partnerships. The partnerships dissolved and Vertucci was cut out of the business, unexpectedly. Nick could have taken this as a time to sulk and quit, but instead he picked himself back up and created his own academy – which, as mentioned previously, has experienced over 250% growth since it opened. Vertucci’s dedication and mindset allowed him to overcome life’s obstacles and grow in ways he could not have imagined.
Vertucci pulls this mindset into his poker game as well. Starting as an amateur and playing primarily with friends, Nick had not imagined that he would be playing with some of the most recognizable poker players in the industry. However, with his mindset intact, he was able to go from playing at the No-Limit Texas Hold’Em Championship at Commerce Casino in 2004 to playing at the World Series of Poker in 2016 – a drastic jump in the type of competitors he was challenging. Both times Vertucci ranked thanks to the mindset he instilled in himself from a young age.
In every table that Vertucci sits at he brings with him the confidence needed to succeed. Years ago, he imagined himself playing poker professionally; he did not sit on the dream, but rather dedicated himself to practice and education to become a noteworthy player. Ultimately, he developed the psyche that he could be at the top of the game. With this strong mindset, Vertucci developed a plan when he entered into his first tournament – and not being fearful of potential loss, he left that game in 8th place. Through the years he has continued to execute this plan – playing in more tournaments, betting higher wages, and ultimately fine tuning his skills. As you can see, the four-key system is effective in all aspects of life – you just need the mindset to continue with it.
- Interpersonal Skills…Understanding Humans
If you have seen a video of Nick or have attended one of his seminars, it is no hidden secret that he is great with people. This skill is essential to being successful in real estate. Working with a wide array of individuals from partners, real estate agents, brokers, loan officers, and many more personal, you must have the ability to read and connect with others. Although the real estate business may seem like it is all about the numbers – it is in fact largely connected to building relationships. To build wealth as an investor you must network and develop confidence in those you work with so that you can successfully close escrow. For example, if you have a seller hesitant to close on the deal, you as the investor may be inclined to identify what their motivation is for selling to provide you with a better position on the deal. However, if you are unable to get such insight, you may lose out on a large investment opportunity.
These interpersonal skills and the ability to read and connect with others is required in poker as well. Many individuals find that poker is strictly about the cards, and that if you can count the cards you are one step ahead of the rest. This individual skill may give you a slight advantage, but the truth in poker is that reading your competitors will give you insight on your position at the table. Can you tell when someone is bluffing? Can you tell when their excitement increases when they are dealt double aces? If you can you will be granted the ability to understand whether you should fold or go for the win.
- Ability to Assess Risk vs. Reward
This is key to success as a real estate investor since the industry can take millions to get a deal done. An investor at NVREA is taught how to use their 401k to get into an investment property. Although this may seem like a great idea, if you are not educated on the risks and rewards of the deal you are proposing, you may risk losing your whole future. Therefore, gaining the knowledge and understanding of how to assess the risks and rewards of each specific deal is necessary to build wealth as a real estate investor.
Just like real estate investing, poker is all about assessing the risk versus the reward. In fact, many poker players utilize the Risk-Reward Concept to assist in their decision making for every hand. This concept is based on one simple idea: “Poker players look for situations with a positive expected value and try to avoid variance.” They play to win and they assess the variable against them in each hand (what the odds are they are likely to win with the cards in hand; then they complete ongoing assessments during the hand.)
In both scenarios, real estate investing and poker playing, assessing risk and reward can make or break your future. Fortunately for Nick, he has finetuned his skills in both, providing him with an overwhelmingly successful real estate career and with an advantage above his opponents at the table.
Vertucci has not only developed a future for himself as an investor, educator, and poker player, but he is also a recognized author. Just this year Vertucci released Seven Figure Decisions: Having the Balls to Succeed.
“You don’t strike it rich by playing it safe. It’s the seven figure decisions that lift you out of the middle class and into the millionaire’s circle.
Nick Vertucci achieved tremendous success by taking bold, calculated risks to reinvent himself after losing everything. In this essential guide and memoir, Nick outlines the six fundamental building blocks that form the foundation of his life-changing philosophy. His inspiring personal history contains valuable lessons in how to push past your fears, radically alter your mindset, and passionately pursue your goals. And he details the four key steps to devise and actualize your own winning plan: See it. Believe it. Map it. Execute it.
The higher you raise your sights, the more spectacularly you can succeed, no matter what professional path you choose to follow. Forget the small change! It’s time to go big in business and in life by making seven figure decisions.”
As you can see, the memoir outlines the key skills that Vertucci uses in all aspects of his life. He provides insight on experiences: both successes and failures. If anyone is looking for a way build their life and develop a new mindset, this book is not one to be missed. Just take it from his reviews:

What Does the Future Hold?
Playing poker, educating, and closing deals: this is Nick’s future. His dedication to his academy will always be number one. However, in his free time, Vertucci can be found regularly participating in a hand at Bicycle Casino’s Live at the Bike stream.
