In the last several decades, scientists have made significant progress in understanding how aging works. Based on 25 years of aging research, Basis by Elysium Health is a result of that progress.
One thing that scientists have learned is that the molecule NAD+ is extremely important to our cellular functions. Our supply of NAD+ declines naturally as we age, and Basis is clinically proven to increase levels of the molecule. The supplement is composed of a patent-pending and proprietary formulation of crystalline nicotinamide riboside and pterostilbene that supports cellular health by increasing and sustaining NAD+ levels and activating sirtuins.
A Deeper Look at Basis by Elysium Health
Our bodies have trillions of cells. In each cell are components called organelles, including the mitochondria and the nucleus, which communicate with each other to carry out all of the processes in our body. This communication consists of physical, chemical, and nutritional processes by which cells convert food to energy, light to imagery, and stimulus to sensation.
Research has demonstrated that this communication relies on NAD+ and on a class of proteins called sirtuins. Sirtuins depend on NAD+ to function, but NAD+ declines in levels as we age .
The functions of NAD+ and sirtuins often overlap, but both are essential to metabolic health and many of our cellular functions, including:
The mitochondria turn nutrition into energy by generating ATP, a molecule that transports energy within cells. ATP is the main, and most efficient, energy source for cellular function.
Our DNA is always exposed to natural factors and external stresses that can harm its structure. When our cells are functioning properly, they monitor and correct the mistakes, leading to a more stable genome.
Calcium serves as a messenger with a role in muscle contraction, cell growth, neurotransmission, and other activities.
The liver is a central organ to all metabolic processes in the body. It helps break down fats for energy and modulate the level of blood sugar. These metabolic processes depend on NAD+.
The cell’s and body’s memory for, and response to, nutritional and environmental cues, which among other things helps govern our sleep and wake cycle, depend on NAD+.
Sirtuins use NAD+ in the regulation of gene transcription, which means that they turn genes on and off to control our body’s response to nutrition levels and stress.
Stem Cell Maintenance
Our organs depend on stem cells for regular maintenance, so a healthy number of functioning stem cells is essential to overall well-being.
Sirtuins play a variety of roles in response stress to maintain health in the cell. NAD+ is also essential to a whole category of processes known as oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions, which play a role in converting raw energy, in the form of food, into the type of energy that our body uses: ATP.
Unfolded Protein Response
After being translated from mRNA to a linear chain of amino acids, proteins are folded into a three-dimensional shape that corresponds with their function. Proteins that aren’t properly assembled are destroyed before they ever leave the cell.
The Science Behind Basis
Basis by Elysium Health is made up of two main ingredients: nicotinamide riboside and pterostilbene. Nicotinamide riboside, which can be found in trace amounts in milk, is a highly efficient precursor to NAD+. Incorporating NR into the body has been shown to restore NAD+ levels in laboratory models, combating the age-related decline in the NAD+ supply that cells experience. Pterostilbene is a powerful polyphenol created by plants to protect against internal and external stress. In the human diet, it is available in trace amounts in certain types of berries. Lab studies have shown that it may improve metabolic health, in particular by activating sirtuins.
In order to show the company’s commitment to pursuing rigorous science, Elysium Health conducted the first-in-humans study on Basis in 2016, demonstrating that the supplement increases NAD+ levels safely and sustainably.
The study was placebo-controlled, randomized, and double-blind. The results showed that participants taking the recommended dose of Basis (250mg nicotinamide riboside and 50mg pterostilbene) saw their NAD+ levels increase by an average of 40 percent four weeks into the trial. Those elevated levels remained there until the end of the trial four weeks later.
The study confirmed that Basis is an effective NAD+ precursor in humans and is a vital first step to ensuring that Basis supports human health. The results of the trial were published in November 2017 in the peer-reviewed online science journal Nature Partner Journals: Aging and Mechanisms of Disease.
