Coffee lovers from throughout North America and the world are readying their coffee pots for the ORGANO™ (recently known as Organo Gold) products that they ordered so that they can fully celebrate National Coffee Day on Sept. 29. Of course, coffee products are part of the daily routine for more than half of Americans and Canadians and a significant percentage of those elsewhere, so this day may not be all that different from every other one. However, many coffee drinkers are going to do something special on top of their normal routine to commemorate this special day.
Some will simply drink more coffee, and a wide variety of places will be offering it for free on this special day. This is one day of the year when you don’t have to pay to be well caffeinated.
It’s not just North Americans who will get to celebrate on this day as National Coffee Day is celebrated on Sept. 29 in more than 20 countries. More than 10 countries enjoy this holiday on different days.
Details are spotty as far as when National Coffee Day was first celebrated in the United States, but it became official in that country in 2005. Meanwhile, International Coffee Day, which is Oct. 1, became official in 2015. Regardless of where or when people celebrate coffee, many combine drinking this tasty beverage with doing things like sending coffee-themed cards to loved ones, buying a painting of a coffee house, getting a t-shirt that celebrates coffee and buying and affixing coffee-related stickers.
In fact, a great way to celebrate National Coffee Day is to not only drink it but to also eat coffee-enhanced food. Foods that have been made with these beans include coffee almonds, coffee jelly, coffee olive oil, coffee bread, coffee syrup and, a popular favorite, coffee ice cream. Then, when you’re done eating those products – hopefully not all of them! – you can floss your teeth with coffee dental floss and put some coffee lip balm on your lips as you decide what to do next on National Coffee Day.
You might be surprised to learn that, although the United States consumes roughly a third of the world’s coffee, the country is not even in the top 20 on a per-capita basis.
Finland currently dominates these rankings as the average Finn consumes roughly 2.6 cups per day. Coffee breaks are a norm at workplaces in this Nordic country, and they don’t take part in half-measures either as virtually nobody here drinks decaf. Second on this list is another Nordic country in Norway; the average Norwegian consumes about 2.0 cups per day. In fact, Europe dominates these rankings as you have to get to No. 10 Brazil before you come across a non-European country. Meanwhile, Canada ranks 19th while the U.S. is 22nd.
If you want to take part in National Coffee Day festivities by going to a coffee shop, the West Coast appears to be the place to be. According to Redfin, the American cities with the most coffee shops per capita, in order, are San Francisco, Seattle, Portland and Oakland. San Francisco is home to 1,062 coffee shops, Seattle has 843, Portland has 737, and Oakland has 274. The best place for coffee aficionados east of the Rocky Mountains – and the only one located in this part of the U.S. that’s ranked in the top seven – is Pittsburgh with 250.
