Julen Lopetegui has stressed that last season Champions league winners have to improve and better themselves day by day. He said that they have to better their form in all facets. The statement came after the team lost their competitive match against Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid suffered a 4-2 defeat to their hostile rivals Atletico Madrid in the recently completed UEFA Super Cup. Atletico Madrid’s Koke and Saul Niguez were the men of the match after they struck the goal post in rapid succession in an additional period at the Tallinn’s A.Le CoqArena. After the normal time, the two teams all drew 2-2. At one time, Real Madrid was up with 2-1. Karim Benzema had cancelled former Chelsea striker Diego Costa’s goal. Benzema delivered a superb header past Atletico’s goalkeeper Oblak after a remarkable cross was delivered from the right wing. The striker scored an effortless goal. However, he applied some technique to ensure the ball was delivered in the net.

Lopetegui was quoted saying that his team had awesome game phases. Unfortunately, they were not lucky enough to seal a win. He went on to congratulate Atletico Madrid for the great win. He remarked that they played well and that they deserved the win. The head coach said that his team was not happy especially due to the fact that they conceded four goals. According to Lopetegui, conceding four goals wasn’t normal. Consequently, they had no option other than to improve. They had to work on their defense and their striking because after they conceded the two goals in the extra time, they never scored any other goal. Lopetegui noted that all facets had to be worked on as he never liked it when his team made silly mistakes that resulted in the concession of goals.

At one time, he would have placed the blunders at an individual level. However, the team lost as a unit and they had to correct the mistakes as a group. It was a feeling of sorrow, sadness and frustration to Real Madrid. They had the upper hand to win the game. However, they never worked hard enough to deserve the win. The team has pledged that they have now learnt their mistakes and that they were going to get up from their comfort zone and start to improve bit by bit. Real Madrid now has the LA Liga League to chase. They have to brace themselves for the game.
