As we get older, we lose moisture in our skin – from general dullness to dry flakey patches. That can feel uncomfortable and affect the way we apply makeup. But what can be done about it? Today, we’re running through Jeunesse Global‘s top five fixes for dry and dehydrated skin and the crucial steps in battling facial dryness.
1. Drink more water
You’ve probably heard this plenty of times, but water is the savior for your skin. While it may seem overly simplistic, drinking the optimal amount of water each day helps increase your skin’s elasticity, combat several skin conditions, reduce signs of stress and eliminate redness. It’s also a necessity for building and maintaining a healthy moisture barrier.
Water also plumps the skin, making your complexion appear younger and your fine lines and wrinkles less noticeable. While you can make considerable improvements to your skin with topical treatments, some internal body processes can pack a seriously damaging punch to both your skin health and your whole body. Water increases your metabolic rate and allows your digestive system to flush out toxins. Being healthy on the inside leads to a healthy look on the outside.
So, when your skin feels a little parched, dull or uncomfortable, look at the problem from the inside out, and address your diet alongside your skin care routine.
2. Avoid stripping products
Step away from the harsh cleansers with several active ingredients. We assure you, you don’t need them. While we all loved those drying, acne-fighting cleansers as teens, their time has passed. There’s a new cleanser king, and this one is all about hydration.
The truth is, a cleanser is a great way to start your treatment regimen. It’s just not the most effective first step to take. The purpose of a facial cleanser is to remove impurities and prep the skin for the layers you apply afterward. The layers that sit on your skin for the rest of the day/night. So a good cleanser will get rid of dirt and grim, but it won’t strip your skin.
Look at the ingredients list. Do you see moisturizing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin, aloe leaf juice or vitamin E? Products like the Luminesce Youth Restoring Cleanser from Jeunesse Global contain several of these key ingredients to moisturize your skin as you cleanse, so it doesn’t feel tight or dry after the product has been rinsed away.
3. Try lighter layers
If your skin is feeling dry, your first instinct might be to slather on the richest moisturizer you can find. While that might feel good, that richness can backfire, depending on your skin type and skin needs. Thick moisturizers can clog pores, leaving your skin worse off than before. And you might wake up the next morning with drier skin.
It’s not necessarily the moisturizer’s fault. There is a difference between hydration and moisture. If your skin is lacking one but you treat it for the other, you might be doing your skin a disservice.
To eliminate this potential problem, try a new approach. Instead of finishing your skin care routine with one big layer of moisturizer, try using several lighter layers of hydration. First, apply a few light layers of a hydrating toner, then top with a serum. If you’re looking to fight the visible signs of aging while hydrating, consider products such as the Luminesce Cellular Rejuvenation Serum from Jeunesse Global, with skin-conditioning botanical ingredients including coconut and sweet potato root extract. After that, simply top with a slightly lighter moisturizer, like the Luminesce Daily Moisturizing Complex from Jeunesse to infuse skin with lasting hydration. If you find that your skin needs a bit more, a slightly richer formula, the Luminesce Advanced Night Repair cream from Jeunesse might be the perfect way to cap off your hydrating nighttime skin care routine.
4. Use treatment products
If your skin isn’t consistently dry, only flaring up on occasion, a standby treatment product might be the perfect option. Our favorite hydrating treatment product is, by far, the sheet mask.
Sheet masks drench your skin with the moisture it needs. As they are designed to sit on your face, the sheet mask material helps to ensure that all the goodies sink into your skin instead of evaporating. Masks like the Luminesce HydraShield Mask from Jeunesse Global, with its luxurious coconut biocellulose and rich shea butter, will do exactly that, while offering lasting, all-day results.
Special occasion? Get your sheet mask on right before you head out. That extra dose of moisture helps plump and hydrate your skin, so your makeup glides on smoothly and doesn’t settle into any fine lines.
5. Don’t overdo it
As tempting as it might seem, avoid running down the skin care aisle at your local store and picking up every single product that says it’s “moisturizing.” Less is often more, especially when it comes to your skin. And trying out a dozen or so new products, one right after the other, could spell disaster for your skin.
Applying too many products in succession can clog your pores, stress out your skin and leave it feeling heavy and congested. You might also find that you’re sensitive to one product or another, so piling on more new products will likely further aggravate your skin.
Our rule of thumb: Limit yourself to two serums or treatments per day/night, followed by a moisturizer. You’ll get enough of the desired active ingredients without overdoing it.
