Banning Firearms Would Lead To More Deaths

Firearms, Firearms Ban

People on the left argue that gun bans would save lives. Within recent years, there have been an alarming amount of mass shootings in public places—especially public schools. Each time such an event happens, people on the left whine for “something to be done.” When they ask for “something to be done,” they are implying that they want the government to take away the Second Amendment and outlaw firearms. They claim that outlawing firearms would lead to less deaths.

In reality, banning firearms would actually lead to more deaths. This is because of the fact that the majority of people who use firearms use them for self-defense and the protection of others. Leftists who want to ban firearms make a big deal whenever a mass shooting happens once in a blue moon, but they do not acknowledge the fact that people protect themselves on a regular basis with firearms. Many people actually need firearms for a number of reasons.

For example, there are a lot of women out there who need firearms to protect themselves against men who feel the urge to assault them. It is a sad fact that, yes, some women are in situations where they have a threatening boyfriend or family member. Also, it is a sad fact that, sometimes, police don’t do fully do their jobs to the fullest extent because they are human beings and don’t want to die.

From 2007 to 2011, there were 235,700 situations where victims used their firearms to either threaten or attack offenders. In that same time span, 103,000 people used firearms to defend property. So, from 2007 to 2011, an average of 67,000 people per year rightfully used their firearms in times of need. Some experts believe that these figures are too low, and that the number of people who defend themselves with firearms is somewhere around 2.1 to 2.5 million. If firearms were banned, the hundreds of thousands, or millions, of people who used firearms for self defense may have been robbed, assaulted and/or killed.

In 2011, there were 11,101 instances where firearms were used to commit homicides. However, most of these homicides were done with illegal firearms. If there were gun bans, most of the people who do gun homicides would not be affected because they attain their guns illegally, anyway. The only people who would be affected would be owners of legal guns—the ones who need guns to protect themselves.
